Dease Lake, BC to Watson Lake, Yukon Territory

Monday, May 16, 2011

Left Dease Lake, BC at 9:30 sharp. Stopped for a break a while down the road, then on to Jade City where we got a little lecture about jade in BC. We did a little shopping, got a jade owl, some jade earrings and a little jade bear.

We stopped again at Blue Lake and took a little dip in the icy water, jk…well just dipped my foot.  We later crossed over into the Yukon Territory and were finally on the Alaska Hwy. (Alcan-Alaska/Canada). We arrived at our campground in Watson Lake and it was the first time we were pretty disappointed about the campground…it was nothing more than a gravel parking lot with hookups. They didn’t even have picnic tables. But, we made the best of it. Later, Kenny and I were talking about this campground and we realized why Spike picked it out…it was near the Northern Lights Centre, a grocery store, gas station and the Sign Post Forest. A very convenient location afterall.

Kenny set up the BBQ and BBQed the brats we picked at the sausage shop in Smithers that were very good. We sat outside and had dinner with the couple camped next to us, Barry and Ruthie. After dinner we went to the Northern Lights Centre, Yukon’s only visitor facility dedicated to the history, folklore, and science of aurora borealis (northern lights). Then we walked over to the town’s most famous landmark, the “Sign Post Forest” that began in 1942, when a homesick US Army engineer erected a sign bearing the name and distance of his hometown.

Our jade pieces we bought, bear with salmon in its mouth, heart earrings and an owl
