Last Night in Oregon

Monday, May 02, 2011

Good Morning! Well, so far we have been blessed with such great weather since we left, but we woke up this morning to a rainy, stormy kind of day. No worries…we actually like to travel on days like this. Left Newport, OR at around 10:30. It was actually a beautiful drive along Hwy. 101, then we left the coastline and drove through farmland. There’s three different landscapes in Oregon: Pacific coastline, farmland and forest with pine trees.  We drove through the pines for several miles, then it opened up to the coast. What a dramatic coastline it is.

We drove through Tillamook, an area famous for its cheese, so of course we stopped at two cheese places. It was overcast most of the day with the sun trying to peek out every now and again. We arrived at the Hammond KOA around 3:30. Very nice and quiet campground.

We got set up and had a glass of wine and some of that cheese that we got from Tillamook and relaxed for awhile. Then, we unhooked the jeep and off we went exploring the area. Went to Fort Stevens, Oregon Coast’s largest state park and saw elk along the road. Nice State campground here. We then drove out to “Clatsip Spit” where the Columbia River flows into the Pacific Ocean. Saw the “Peter Iredale Shipwreck,” the rusting remains of an old English sailing ship that ran aground during a storm in 1906.

Went to Buoy 9 and had the most delicious crab Louis salad we’ve ever had. There was so much crab on top of it, you couldn’t even see the lettuce below.

First cheese place we stopped at.
