Leaving Oregon

Tuesday, May 03, 2011

It rained last night, but we woke up to another beautiful day. We left Hammond at 10:15. Went over this long and high bridge leaving Astoria, OR going into Washington on Hwy. 101. Once in Washington, we drove through forests, then farmland and back into the forest and big, beautiful pine trees. It started to rain again and its 57°. It’s so green everywhere you look. About 1½ hr into our drive, the sky opened up and we got to see blue sky again with big puffy clouds. Today we listened to a new Sirius station, the “Bridge” that played songs from Jimmy Buffet, CSNY, Rod Stewart, Van Morrison, Beatles, Carol King and James Taylor…oldies but goodies.

We saw the last of the Pacific Ocean for awhile. The highway was dotted with daffodils along both sides. Then, we took Hwy. 112 because we thought we would be driving along the coastline, but to our chagrin, it was heavily forested between the highway and the coast, so we only got little glimpses of the coastline. The road was horrible and very windy throughout the entire 55 mile drive.

We arrived at the very quaint Elwha RV Park around 4:30. We set up and off we went to check out Port Angeles and the ferry system for our trip to Victoria tomorrow. Then, we drove over to Port Townsend (as if Kenny hadn’t done enough driving today), about a 45 min. drive. Kenny wanted to check out the drive over there and getting the motorhome on the ferry. They told us it wouldn’t be a problem, big truckers do it all the times. We drove back to our campsite and called it a night.
