Enjoying British Columbia

Saturday, May 7, 2011 – Quesnel, BC. We all slept in a little…7:30. Enjoyed having our coffee, looking out at the lake watching the fishermen go out in their little one-man boats and enjoying seeing the ducks and muskrats in the water. Talked to a guy yesterday that said they were catching rainbow trout out of the lake. We got ready and had to stop at an RV store to buy fluorescent bulbs that burned out in the bathroom.  Then, Kenny wanted to get his “Tim Horton” fix (Canada’s version of a drive-thru), great biscuits and coffee. Then off we went to Costco in Prince George (about a 45 min. drive) to pick up supplies for our trip. While driving there, I called Carolyn to see how she was doing as Don’s Memorial Services with full military honors and a 21 gun salute took place yesterday. I’m sure it was a very somber day for their family and our thoughts were with her and her family.

It’s funny how different Costcos are in different states and countries. The floor plans and things they carry (French food) here are totally different than what we’re use to. Some things we’ve never even heard of. I needed some parmigiano regiano cheese, but when I saw the price of a small chunk was $25 minimum (I pay about $15 for the same thing in CA and MT), I decided I didn’t need it that bad. We were looking for some tri-tip roasts, but the butcher said that was an “American” term and they didn’t carry anything like it. We ended up just get some other types of steaks and a few other things we needed and headed back to Quesnel.

Kenny called Kyle at Cully’s where they were having the “Donny Bash” at the local Potomac bar where Donny frequented. He told him to make sure they toasted a beer for us in Don’s memory. We hope all of our Montana friends/family had a nice day remembering Don Hanson.

On our way back, Kenny was scoping out a place to watch the last Supercross race of the year. We found a place call Sharky’s Sports Pub. He asked them if they would be able to show it and they said yes. Once back at our campsite, Kenny BBQed steaks and we had a wonderful meal and toasted Donny again. After dinner, we headed over to Sharky’s. It was great fun for Kenny to be able to watch the races on the one lone TV screen amongst many Canucks watching their hockey team play the Nashville Predators in the playoffs on all the other many TVs. But, after the game was over, he converted a couple of Canadians and they got into the race too.

Windham and Stewart were battling for first. Then suddenly Stewart crashed and Windham crashed into him and they were both out of it. Chad Reed won the race. Kenny and Justin were in constant contact, discussing the results of each of the heat races. I know they both really enjoyed watching it, but disappointed they weren’t together in Las Vegas watching them live. All and all, it was a very good and fun day.

Sunday, May 08, 2011 – Happy Mothers’ Day! Started my morning off with Kenny bringing me coffee in bed. Then he made me breakfast…a bowl of cereal. He offered to make me a big breakfast, but I didn’t feel like it. He also got me these beautiful tulips yesterday (reminded me of Butchart Gardens. It was beautiful morning here in Quesnel. We had a very nice leisurely morning. We left Roberts Roost around noon. Really hate leaving this campground.  The weather was perfect and all the people were so nice. We really enjoyed our little time here, but onward and upward.

On our drive today, we saw three eagles flying above us. Just a few miles past Prince George, the landscape changed to a dried up looking forest.  Tall, skinny very dried looking pines, must have had a fire come through this area in recent years.

We arrived at Dave’s RV Park, Vanderhoof, BC at 3:00. We drove about 140 miles and it was an easy drive today. At first glance, it didn’t look that great, but once we went to our site #16, it was just fine. Certainly not as nice as Roberts Roost on Dragon Lake, but we’re only going to be here for one night and it has full hookups and Wi-Fi. We set up and you know the routine, drove into Vanderhoof to check it out.  It’s a very small town…not much going on here. Came back to our campground and Kenny made me dinner (well, I helped) while I did laundry. The best thing was, he cleaned up after dinner.
